Just Finished

Jonna-ACS Pendant with Labadorite cabachon-3603-72r2cc

I had the best time at the Tucson gem shows this year with my friend Pat Weilbacher.  Among other things, I found some fabulous cabochons.  I just finished this piece using one of my new labradorite cabs.  I’m getting ready to teach workshops that involve soldering fine silver bezels onto silver metal clay.  Very excited about sharing this method of bringing color into my work!!!

New Classes, New Work

I’m delighted to have finalized and posted my class schedule for the remainder of 2016.

I just finished teaching my first cuff class that combined copper sheet metal with silver metal clay embellishments.  We used rivets to attach the silver pieces to the cuff.  The photos above were taken by Steve Rossman and show my most recent cuffs.  My students produced gorgeous work and enjoyed the process.  I’m looking forward to teaching this workshop again at the end of the month at Pat Weilbacher’s studio in Arroyo Grande, CA.

Not a Minute Too Soon

I love teaching classes for so many reasons, the main one being that I get to be in company with wonderful students who inspire me and make every day brighter.  Teaching also challenges me to develop new projects and explore technical issues in more depth.

I’m very pleased with the new project I’ll be teaching this coming weekend, May 14 & 15, 2016.  We’ll be working with Goldie Bronze, making beautiful pendants that can be worn for any occasion, from the ballroom to the grocery store.  I’m more likely to be found in the latter arena, especially when my husband is out of town on a photo assignment.

We will explore making round and square tubing, building hinges, prong setting stones that can’t go in the kiln , pearl setting, flush settings stones that can be fired, and various approaches to finishing techniques.

The class size for this workshop is restricted to 6 students.  Four spots have been filled, so let me know as soon as you can if you’d like to participate.  My email address is jonnafaulkner@gmail.com.

Perhaps the class itself could be a gift for Mother’s Day?  It will be lots of fun and everyone will make a beautiful necklace that is uniquely their own.  If you’d like to participate, just email me at jonnafaulkner@gmail.com.

Getting Ready for Mother’s Day

This coming weekend, April 16 and 17, I’ll be teaching a dramatic necklace class that involves multiple elements and several special techniques.  The pieces produced will make wonderful Mother’s Day gifts or presents for yourself.

We’ll begin by making silver metal clay tubing which will form the basis for all parts of the necklace except for the clasp.  We’ll add elements to the tubing that create a cohesive theme such as Treasures from the Sea, Delights in the Garden, or The Heart of the Matter.  We will also create a clasp that echoes the theme of the necklace.

The class will be held in my Escondido, CA, workshop.  Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  If you’re interested in participating or have any questions, just email me at jonnafaulkner@gmail.com.  Hope to see you there!!!

One of the big excitements around here is the news that I’ll be teaching again for the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program in 2016.  My workshop title is Metal Clay Intensive: Earrings.  During the course of three days, we’ll explore a variety of wonderful techniques to make fabulous earrings, one of the top sellers for those of you who offer your work for sale.

More about that in a minute.  The big news is that if you enroll and pay for your workshop by April 15 AND if you let the registrar Diane know that you heard this from me, you’ll get a 10% discount off the workshop fee!!!  Score!!!

Dates for my workshop are July 9, 10 and 11, 2016 (Saturday, Sunday and Monday).

We will focus on making dramatic, dimensional earrings in this workshop but the many techniques covered will apply equally to the construction of other types of jewelry and jewelry elements.  We will make conical structures, use cork clay as an armature to make hollow forms, employ frames to create emphasis, and explore layering through rivets and/or appliqué work.  Other techniques will include the keum-boo process to layer 24k gold onto fine silver, pearl and stone setting, soldering ear posts, and making ear wires.

The basic material we’ll use is silver metal clay, a malleable material that works like clay but, after firing in a kiln or with a torch, is composed solely of pure silver.

Participants can expect to make at least 7 pair of earrings.

Idyllwild’s setting in the Strawberry Valley on the western slope of San Jacinto Mountains in southern California is truly breathtaking.  Wild life abounds in the beautiful scenery.

To register for this workshop, call Diane in the Registrar’s Office at 951-468-7265. If you have other questions, feel free to write me at jonnafaulkner@gmail.com.
